BlueberryML gives a character somewhere to live: a space where it grows, feels and remembers. What it says next comes from where it is.
What a character feels is a position. Valence runs from unpleasant to pleasant; arousal from calm to charged. Warmth and attention add two more axes.
These are named, measured axes from affect research, the same way the learning manifold uses the things a teacher already measures. A feeling stops being a word in a prompt and becomes a coordinate.
Something happens and the state moves. Left alone, it settles back towards the character’s baseline, at a pace set by who the character is: some recover in minutes, some carry a mood for a while.
Time away is lived through as time. A character comes back settled, never worse for your absence.
Traits are the slow layer: who the character is. They change over weeks and months, not turns, and they set how far each event moves the state.
Before anything moves, an event is appraised: how new it is, how certain, whether it can be handled, and who caused it. The appraisal decides the direction of the move; the traits decide how far.
That is why the same words land differently on different days, and differently on different characters.
The learning manifold already tracks a trajectory: where someone was, where they are, where they’re heading. A personality needs exactly that sense of change over time.
The substrate inherits it. A character is a worldline too: it grows, stalls, picks up again, and has a direction.
What happened between this character and this person, and how it changed them both. Ruptures happen and repairs count: warmth earned over weeks doesn’t vanish in one bad exchange, and it doesn’t appear in one good one.
Memory fades the way it does for people. What mattered stays.
Most AI characters are handed notes about themselves: a long prompt, a Markdown file, past conversations retrieved by similarity. They read them every turn and hope the right ones come back.
The substrate gives the character a position, and every turn moves it. Growth, feeling and memory stacked on one geometry. That is why it stays itself.
